Newspaper article in AZ

From: azroadie66 (azroadie@att.net) | Date: 2004-09-02 15:26:36 UTC
Today's "Arizona Daily Star" - the major daily newspaper for
southern Arizona - had a moderately large article about
letterboxing. Here is the link to the article:
http://www.dailystar.com/dailystar/accent/36968.php . The actual
paper article had four photographs: one of the first clue at the
beginning of the trail, one of the clue and trail near the box, one
of the box under the pile of rocks under the tree, and one of the
first page of the log book. The article is fine. I am not sure I
approve of the photos - I think they make it too easy for non-
letterboxers to find it and possibly vandalize it! What do you
think?

I agree with you AZroadie, I think they did make it too easy to vandalize. I wish they had found a letterboxer to interview so they could have emphasized the secrecy AND leave no trace ideas. Maybe the clues to that box should be modified and the box slightly moved? Is it your box?

Hi,
Just read the article in The Az Star. Very nice but not pictures.

STAR:W+S=DRR
Long Island, New York where they are just discovering letterboxing

I think they can kiss that box good-bye. Can you contact the owner
and maybe rescue it before something bad happens to it?

I think they should respect the fact that the boxes are hidden and not give out the clues or locations.

I didn't like how they used the word "buried" so many times and "dig up".
Could give the wrong impression and imply the environment is disrupted as
part of the LBing process...

Yes, and considering that we have visited the box and
it is not buried, it does give the wrong impression...

There is an email contact for the reporter at the end of the online article. You can
contact her there with your concerns. I am also curious if she consulted Apple
Dumpling Gang and AZ Roadie regarding reprinting their clues and stamp images,
both of which are against the etiquette posted in the LbNA FAQs. Funhog

To follow up on Funhog's comment ... surely, as a member of the
press, the author should have been more diligent in protecting the
copyrights of the authors/artists.

They obviously knew enough to find the clues on the letterboxing dot
org site, which always contains a 'contact the placer' link to email
the creator of the box. I wonder why they didn't take advantage of
that option and chose to say something like, letterboxers are an
elusive bunch ... (another of those things that make you go hmmmmm)

Personally, I'd be very upset to find one of my boxes the subject of
such an article, and I WOULD contact the author of the piece as well
as the Editor of the paper. Not that it could do much good, but it
would make me feel better. (grin)

Enjoy!
